The band not only plays the standard V chord (E7) in measure 12, but extends it another three measures using a hip rhythm fill echoed back and forth between guitar, bass, and piano on one side and horns on the opposite. Buddy Miles provides the glue and lays down a unison drum fill under both sides.

First Solo

Michael was well versed in the common positions and “boxes” for blues soloing, as illustrated in the following three Solo excursions. The Verse rhythm provides the backdrop for Bloomfield’s Solo, which takes three consecutive rounds to unfold. His sharp ear and chord knowledge allow him to follow the changes. For instance, in the first Solo, he pronounces the D7 chord tonality (measure 5) by repeatedly hitting F# (3rd of D7) and A6 in measure 7 by nailing C# (3rd of A6). The move at the end of measure 8 and beginning of 9 is classic Bloomfield; the songs “Albert’s Shuffle” and “Texas” contain similar ideas. Using the “B.B. King box,” the final three measures exercise a repetitive lick that builds tension and sets up the following Solo.
